Mange barn har fått sin første telefon til jul. Men før du gir barnet ditt tilgang på nettet, og dermed hele verden, er det noen ting du bør tenke gjennom.

Sender du niåringen på bytur alene? For de fleste foreldre er svaret på det spørsmålet nei. Sannsynligvis drar dere sammen. Som voksen kan du forklare hvor i byen det er noe morsomt å oppleve og hvilke strøk som kan være litt skumle. På hjemveien snakker dere sikkert om turen – både det som var fint og om det var noe som ikke gikk like greit.

Vær sammen med barna når de skal på nett for første gang

På samme måte bør du tilby en trygg hånd å holde i når barnet ditt skal på nett for første gang. Sett deg inn i hvilke apper og tjenester som er aktuelle, hvilke aldersgrenser som gjelder, ta stilling til hva du ønsker at ditt barn skal få lov til å bruke, og snakk med barnet om det.

Allerede fra tidlig alder er det lurt å forberede barnet på at det kan komme over ubehagelig eller skremmende innhold på nett, og at det er viktig å si fra til en voksen dersom det skulle skje. Gjennom å bruke foreldrekontroll og innstillinger i de ulike appene, kommer du et stykke på vei. Men presset om å åpne opp for tjenester med høyere aldersgrense kommer fort. Og da bør du ha satt deg inn i de ulike aldersgrensene og hvorfor de er satt.

To typer aldersgrenser for sosiale medier

Det finnes to typer aldergrenser for sosiale medier; aldersgrense for innsamling av personopplysninger og aldersgrenser for innhold. I 2018 kom det nye personvernregler i Norge (personopplysningsloven). Det er ikke lov til å samle inn og bruke personopplysninger til barn under 13 år uten samtykke fra foreldrene deres. Det er altså ikke ulovlig for barn å være på sosiale medier før de har fylt 13, men dersom de skal ha egen profil må de ha tillatelse fra foreldrene. 

I tillegg til denne aldersgrensen har mange tjenesteleverandører egne aldersanbefalinger ut fra hvilke målgrupper de mener tjenesten eller innholdet de formidler passer for. Google Play og Windows klassifiserer for eksempel sine apper og spill ut fra den europeiske merkeordningen PEGI, mens Apple har et eget aldersgrensesystem. Disse aldersanbefalingene kan hjelpe deg med å finne ut om den aktuelle tjenesten er ment for aldersgruppen til ditt barn, men til sjuende og sist er det viktig at du selv tar stilling til om det er noe du ønsker at barnet ditt skal få tilgang til.

Tre råd om sosiale medier

Vi i Medietilsynet har tre råd til deg som vurderer om barnet ditt skal få tilgang til sosiale medier som TikTok, Snapchat eller Instagram. For det første bør du vurdere eget barns modenhet. Tror du at ditt barn kan takle utfordringer som kan oppstå på nett? Føler du deg sikker på at barnet sier ifra dersom det skulle skje noe ubehagelig eller skremmende, for eksempel hvis fremmede tar kontakt eller et bilde kommer på avveie? Dersom du konkluderer med at barnet ditt skal få bruke sosiale medier, bør du opprette profilen sammen med barnet. Gå gjennom sikkerhets- og personverninnstillingene, og diskuter hvilke innstillinger det er lurt å velge og hvorfor. Vurder også om barnet i starten kun skal få privat bruker.

For det andre bør du følge godt med den første tiden barnet ditt er på nett. Ta deg tid til å snakke om opplevelser og erfaringer, og still åpne spørsmål. Hvis du er interessert og lyttende, blir det også enklere for barnet å komme til deg dersom det skjer noe som ikke er greit.

Det tredje rådet er å diskutere med andre foreldre (for eksempel i klassen) når det er greit å åpne opp for å opprette profiler i sosiale medier, og hvilke apper barna skal få tilgang til. Felles regler gjør det lettere både for barn og foreldre. Det er like viktig å passe på at ingen faller utenfor på nett som i det fysiske samværet. Snakk med barnet ditt om at det er viktig å inkludere også digitalt, og at ekle kommentarer og utestenging ikke er ok.

Dagens barn og unge lever digitale liv fra ung alder. Ifølge Barn og medier 2020-undersøkelsen er ni av ti barn og unge (9-18 år) på sosiale medier, og halvparten er på allerede fra 9-årsalderen. For de fleste er det både morsomt og lærerikt. Men i startfasen, og en god stund framover, trenger de en trygg hånd, på denne arenaen som på så mange andre. Gaven du ga bort til jul er garantert populær. Men du bør også gjøre ditt for at den blir tryggest mulig for barnet ditt.
